This breaker has a shunt trip fitted. The -1021 suffix is Square D's designation for a factory-installed 120/240V AC shunt trip, which allows the breaker to be opened remotely by an external control signal — a fire alarm interface, an emergency stop, or a control system interlock. Match the coil voltage to the control circuit: -1021 is 120/240V and -1037 is 277/480V. Fitting a shunt trip after the fact is not always practical, so a factory-equipped original is worth seeking out.

The Square D K-frame is legacy product, crossed to the PowerPacT J-Frame. Shunt-trip-equipped originals are scarcer than plain breakers. ESP stocks tested reconditioned K-frame units, including other shunt-trip variants.

The four digits on the end are the reason to want this particular unit. A shunt trip lets an external signal open the breaker remotely, which is what fire alarm interfaces, emergency stop circuits and control system interlocks require. Coil voltage is the thing to match. This is the 120/240V version; the 277/480V equivalent carries a -1037 suffix instead. Ordering the wrong one means a shunt trip that will not operate on the control circuit. The base breaker is a KAL36125: K frame, 125 amperes, 600 volts, adjustable magnetic trip, lugs at both ends. The PowerPacT J-Frame is the modern crossover and needs a panel change.
