This device provides no overcurrent protection. A non-automatic interrupter opens and closes under load and gives a positive disconnect point, but it has no trip of any kind and will not open on an overload or a fault. Protection must be provided by another device in the circuit. The circuit breaker on the same JJ frame is JJ3-B400 — one letter apart, and not a substitute for one another.

The S in this catalog number is ITE saying the device does not trip. It is a switch built into a breaker case, sized to open and close a 400-ampere circuit under load. Where these earn their place is isolation duty: a switchboard position that needs a positive disconnect where protection is already handled upstream, or an interlocked arrangement where only one source may feed a load at a time. The breaker on the same frame is JJ3-B400. If overcurrent protection is what the position needs, that is the part, not this one. Reconditioned, tested, one-year operational guarantee.
