Protection is thermal-magnetic: a bimetal element answers sustained overload, a magnetic element clears short circuits within the first half cycle. An overcurrent on any pole opens all 3 together. The two work independently, which is why a breaker that holds steady under load can still fail to clear a bolted fault, and why testing checks both. At 20 amps the usual service is small three-phase branch circuits. Plug-on to GE/ABB PowerMark Gold and Q-Line load centers, reconditioned rather than merely used.
