Important — this is a molded case switch, not a circuit breaker. It provides load-break switching and isolation only. It contains no trip unit and will not protect against overload or short circuit. Overcurrent protection must be provided elsewhere in the circuit, by upstream fuses or a protective breaker. For a 1200A N-frame device with overcurrent protection, the NB31200 series breaker is the equivalent part.

The Cutler-Hammer NB31200N is a three-pole N-frame molded case switch rated 1200 amperes at 600V AC. It is a non-automatic device: it makes and breaks load current and provides a positive disconnecting means, but contains no trip unit and offers no overload or short-circuit protection.

Molded case switches are specified where switching and isolation are needed but protection is provided elsewhere in the system — downstream of fused gear, as a disconnecting means ahead of a separately protected feeder, in service-entrance positions, or in motor control centers where the branch device supplies the protection. Because the switch shares the N-frame footprint and bolt-on mounting of the equivalent protective breaker, it installs directly into the same panelboard or switchboard position.

The N-frame is a 400–1600 ampere frame class, UL rated at 1200 amperes in this configuration. The unit is suitable for reverse feed and HACR rated. Terminals are not supplied as standard with this frame; confirm the lug requirements when ordering. Ships freight or heavyweight parcel due to size and weight.
